Nine hours, a coast and a hilltop: the Cefalù and Monreale excursion from Palermo divides the day between the two, with an air-conditioned coach to do the driving and a leader who speaks Italian, English and Spanish.
The morning belongs to Cefalù. After the drive along the Tyrrhenian coast you walk the cobbled lanes of the old town up to the Cathedral-Fortress, a UNESCO site with the island's first Byzantine mosaics. In your free time you can head to the old harbour, photograph the medieval wash-house, cut straight into the rock, browse artisan shops, or bring a swimsuit and spend time on the golden beach.
In the afternoon the road winds up the green hillside of Monte Caputo to Monreale. Its cathedral, nicknamed the world's eighth wonder, is covered inside by more than 6,500 square metres of mosaics on a gold background, with the large figure of Christ Pantocrator above it all. You also get time for the Benedictine Cloister and for the lookout over the Conca d'Oro valley and Palermo.

You move around at your own pace, and the day ends with a drop-off in Palermo. Admission tickets are not included. Bring comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen. Not suitable for wheelchair users.
