Monreale and Cefalù Tour from Palermo, Half Day

This Monreale and Cefalù tour from Palermo takes you out of the busy centre for about six hours, to a hillside cathedral and a historic seaside town. You are picked up at a central meeting point in Palermo.

The first stop is Monreale, on the slopes of Monte Caputo, where you get about an hour at the Norman cathedral from the 12th century, a major example of medieval church building in the south of Italy. An audio guide tells its history and can be paid for on site.

The road then follows the north coast of Sicily for around an hour and a half to Cefalù, with a Greek past and a 12th-century cathedral of its own. Sights on your walk:

• the traces of the Middle Ages at Osterio Magno
• the panoramic view from Porta Terra
• the Greek and Arab ceramics kept in the Mandralisca Museum
• the 16th-century wash basins at the Lavatoio, down a curving stone staircase
