Description
A Mount Etna and Taormina day trip from Palermo goes first to the volcano, Europe's highest active one, a favourite with scientists, trekkers and nature lovers alike. A tour leader and a driver go with you, and the vehicle is air-conditioned.
At the Silvestri Craters, a funicular carries you up to about 2,500 metres above sea level for panoramic views. On the way you hear facts and history about the mountain. The funicular ticket is not included.
The coast comes next. Just south of Taormina you reach the Isola Bella nature reserve, and beyond it the seaside resort of Giardini Naxos. Taormina itself lies about 75 minutes by road from the volcano. The town perches on a cliff above the Ionian Sea and offers a Greek theatre from antiquity, plus old churches, shops selling antiques, busy bars and restaurants where you can stop for a meal after a walk.
