Description
The street food tour in Palermo starts in front of the opera house, where you meet the guide and the other travellers. A welcome toast with Sicilian beer or wine and a meat dish gets things going, and then you walk towards the old port.
The stops are stalls, delis, bakeries and fast-food counters in the middle of Vucciria, not restaurants, so there are no guaranteed seats. The guide only picks what locals really eat. You try panelle, potato croquettes, sfincione, arancini and the ravazzata with ragù, and the brave can order the famous spleen sandwich, Pani ca' Meusa. Expect enough food to stand in for a full meal, plus three drinks in all, including one at the oldest tavern in town.
- welcome drink with a meat dish
- sfincione, arancini, panelle and potato croquettes
- ravazzata with ragù and the Pani ca' Meusa
- cannoli or gelato to finish, and a digital mini guide of Palermo
The group is limited to 12 people, in English, so you can chat with the guide, who points out hidden corners and talks about history, art and daily life. The tour lasts three hours. Tell the organiser if you are vegetarian or pescatarian. It is not for vegans, picky eaters or people on a low-carb diet, since the food is fried and rich in carbs.
