Description

Piazza Indipendenza, formerly known as Piazza Santa Teresa, is one of the most important central squares in the city due to the presence of significant buildings, such as Palazzo d'Orleans, seat of the Sicilian Regional Presidency, the rear entrance of the Sicilian Regional Assembly, which leads to the Palatine Chapel, the Palermo Military District, and the church of the Madonna dei Rimedi, once dedicated to Saint Teresa of Avila.

The square is located just beyond the old city walls in the direction of Monreale; the area was also called Mezzomonreale in ancient times, beyond Porta Nuova (Palermo). Facing the square, we also find a vast central garden of fairly recent times and one of the fortified walls of the Palazzo dei Normanni.
