Description

The Tonnara Bordonaro or Tonnara Vergine Maria is a tuna trap located in the Vergine Maria district of Palermo. It was built in the 14th century, almost simultaneously with the Tonnara Florio, situated a short distance away.

The Tonnara Bordonaro, the Tonnara Florio and the Tonnara di Mondello, now gone, belong to the same owner. In the 15th century, thanks to the construction of the tower, it became part of the defensive circuit of the Sicilian coasts. In the fifties it was decommissioned and abandoned like the other tuna traps in the area due to the change in the route of the tuna.

Recently the tuna trap has been restored, and at the beginning of the summer of 2006 it became an evening meeting place, under the name of "Kursaal Tonnara - Vergine Maria."
