- Piazza Ruggero Settimo
Description
Piazza Ruggero Settimo, along with Piazza Castelnuovo, is the most important square in Palermo. The two squares together are colloquially known as Piazza Politeama.
The square is located at the beginning of Via Libertà, where the street of the same name ends. Since the city's development has concentrated in the northern area, this square has become the city's nerve center, a main meeting place, also thanks to its large size. The Teatro Politeama overlooks the square, and at the center of the square is the statue of Ruggero Settimo, after whom the square is named.
A few years ago, the square underwent a significant transformation with the conversion of large sections into a pedestrian area, making it even more the city's meeting point, especially for young people. Inside the pedestrian area, light displays have been created that represent constellations.
